Physical Description: 12.9 linear feet
Scope and Content Note
Giuseppe Fiorelli (1823-1896) was the scholar responsible for establishing scientific
excavation at Pompeii. Given Fiorelli's dominant role in the history of Pompeiian
archaeology, it comes as no surprise that Vander Poel planned to update and expand
several key works by this author and gathered a significant amount of other material
related to Fiorelli and his work.
As the primary project related to Fiorelli, Vander Poel intended to create a new edition of
Pompeianarum Antiquitatum Historia . Fiorelli had compiled and edited the original daily
and weekly reports of the early excavators of Pompeii during the period from 1748 to
1859. He published this compilation as Pompeianarum Antiquitatum Historia (P.A.H.),
which came out in three volumes from 1860 to 1864. The majority of the material in this
subseries relates to Vander Poel's analysis and documentation of the P.A.H. volumes. The
content of these volumes is invaluable, yet as published they are extremely difficult to
use. They have no indices nor standard topographic references. The project of
transcribing and analyzing the P.A.H. had been begun by Tatiana Warscher in the 1930's
(see above Box 112) and was continued by Vander Poel since 1960. He envisioned
creating indices and intended to "analyze and interpret" the work in a new four volume
publication.
Vander Poel also intended to do a project involving Fiorelli's 1875 synthetic guidebook
Descrizione di Pompei. This was spurred by the fact that Vander Poel gained access to an
annotated copy of the book belonging to August Mau (1840-1909), one of the great
Pompeian scholars of his time. Vander Poel was interested in the intersection of these
two scholars' thoughts on Pompeii and commissioned a transcription and translation of
Mau's notes. He also intended to add topographical analyses and documentation.
The rest of the subseries contains material related to a third work by Fiorelli, Gli scavi di
Pompei dal 1861 al 1872 and other miscellaneous material related to Fiorelli.
