VANDER POEL CAMPANIAN COLLECTION, circa 1570-1997 Physical Description: 1 bound volume with 24 engravings Scope and Content Note In 1789, Carlo Labruzzi, an Italian landscape painter, accompanied the English antiquarian Sir Richard Colt Hoare on a journey down the Via Appia from Rome to Brindisi, retracing the travel of the Roman poet Horace along the same route in 38 B.C. Labruzzi's role was to document ancient monuments and inscriptions along the way. Over 800 watercolor sketches survive from this expedition, a small number of which served as the sources for these engravings.
