Scope and Content Note<br />

In 1789, Carlo Labruzzi, an Italian landscape painter, accompanied the English<br />

antiquarian Sir Richard Colt Hoare on a journey down the Via Appia from Rome to<br />

Brindisi, retracing the travel of the Roman poet Horace along the same route in 38<br />

B.C. Labruzzi's role was to document ancient monuments and inscriptions along<br />

the way. Over 800 watercolor sketches survive from this expedition, a small<br />

number of which served as the sources for these engravings.<br />
