Research on Gli ornati delle pareti ed i pavimenti delle stanze dell'antica Pompei incisi in rame , 1796-1838, 1964-1972, undated Physical Description: 4.1 linear feet Scope and Content Note Gli ornati delle pareti was a suite of 109 prints documenting paintings and mosaics from Pompeii. These prints were originally published in three bound volumes from 1796 to 1808; subsequent printings up to 1838 produced varying editions. During the course of his research on these prints, Vander Poel both acquired a volume of the prints and commissioned photographs from copies of Gli ornati held in several libraries. Box 526* Volume of bound prints from Gli ornati delle pareti, 1796-1838 Physical Description: 1 bound volume with 69 prints Scope and Content Note Although labeled as Volume I of the original edition, this volume actually holds an assembled group of prints. The title page for Volume I is used here, but the prints are a mixture of those found in both Volumes I and II of the original edition, as well as later reprints. Vander Poel has annotated the prints in this volume, adding bibliographic information. Research on the plates in Le antichità di Ercolano esposte [Pd'E], undated Physical Description: 0.8 linear feet Scope and Content Note Delle antichità di Ercolano comprises eight volumes published from 1757 to 1792. The volumes illustrate paintings, bronzes and other objects from the early excavations. Continuing a project begun by Tatiana Warscher (see above Box 112), Vander Poel prepared plate concordances listing the original provenance of the object, inventory number, current location in the museum and bibliography for each plate. The precise date of Vander Poel's work on this project is unknown. Documentation of objects in the Museo archeologico nazionale di Napoli, 1960-1971, undated Physical Description: 5.6 linear feet Scope and Content Note Improving the documentation of objects from Pompeii in the Museo archeologico nazionale di Napoli was another of Vander Poel's goals. Concerned over the state of the records in the museum, Vander Poel initiated two projects, a reconstruction of the catalog of the museum, which had been lost in the 1960s, and a photographic inventory of the frescoes not on public display. Work on these projects appears to be in preliminary form. Series VI.A. Catalog of the Museo archeologico nazionale di Napoli, 1960-1971, undated Physical Description: 2.5 linear feet Scope and Content Note Vander Poel began a reconstruction of the Museo Archeologico catalog because the original volumes, which recorded the acquisition numbers, dates of acquisition, and inventory numbers of objects held by the museum, had been lost. This reconstruction emphasizes the frescoes, but also includes other media, such as marbles, bronzes, vases, terracottas, and inscriptions. For each object, Vander Poel provided basic information and bibliographic references, and in many cases, a photograph. 2002.M.16 237
