Scope and Content Note
Wilhelm Zahn (1800-1871) was an architect and painter, who spent the years 1824-1827
in Italy. A substantial part of this time was spent at Pompeii studying and drawing the
frescoes. His work Die schönsten Ornamente was published in six parts from 1828 to
1859 and reproduced the paintings and decorative moldings of Pompeii. It was meant to
be used as a pattern book for designers and as such has drawbacks for scholars. The
reproductions of the paintings are very accurate in the details, but sometimes figures are
transposed and the precise original location of a painting is rarely given.
Vander Poel had prepared his "Apparatus" for Zahn, essentially an unpublished
manuscript of additions of bibliography and provenance information for each plate in
Zahn. Also included here are Vander Poel's earlier research materials, that is copies of his
cataloging sheets and photographic copies of the plates and transcriptions and
photographic copies of the text.
