Series V.H. Piranesi prints of Pompeii, 1804-1989, undated
Physical Description: 1.2 linear feet
Scope and Content Note
Giovanni Battista Piranesi visited Pompeii on five occasions between 1770 and 1778. The
various volumes of prints executed from drawings by him and his sons provide some of
the earliest known views of areas of the site. They remain important today because they
include features of the site that have long since disappeared. Vander Poel collected
Piranesi images of Pompeii and intended to identify the exact locations of the scenes
depicted.
