Early measured drawings of Pompeii by Charles François Mazois, 1809-1981, undated Physical Description: 0.8 linear feet Scope and Content Note Charles François Mazois (1783-1826), a French architect, spent the years 1809-1811 in residence at the excavations at Pompeii. His stay culminated in a four-volume work Les Ruines de Pompéi, published in Paris from 1824-1838, which included his drawings and measurements of the site. This was the first extensive graphic work on Pompeii. Vander Poel initiated a course of general research on Mazois for an analysis and documentation of his work. He gained access to Mazois' original drawings for the work and he was particularly interested in documenting variations between the original and the printed versions of his plans and drawings. Several letters were also included with this material: letter to Vander Poel from W. G. Eagleton (14 May 1980) who wants to sell a rare book; from Vander Poel to Molly (30 Jun 1980) with draft of introduction for Prof. Rivet's reaction; photocopy of letter from Jeremy Blake (22 Mar 1980) regarding the variance of scales in Mazois' plates; letter from Paul Williamson of the Victoria and Albert Museum (23 Mar 1981) responding to query regarding Mazois' engraver; copy of letter from Liliane Ziegel (22 Nov 1979) regarding Mazois' scales . Research on Niccolini, Le case ed i monumenti di Pompei disegnati e descritti , 1854-1896, 1964-1966, undated Physical Description: 0.4 linear feet Scope and Content Note Le case ed i monumenti di Pompei was an exhaustive work meant to be a complete catalog of remains from Pompeii, from topography to plans of individual buildings to paintings and mosaics. The project was initiated by Antonio Niccolini (1772-1850) and carried out by his sons Fausto and Felice and his grandson Antonio. The work was issued in over 100 fascicles in the period from 1854 to 1896. Vander Poel was in the initial phases of this project. He had begun collecting images, but had not yet added analysis. Piranesi prints of Pompeii, 1804-1989, undated Physical Description: 1.2 linear feet Scope and Content Note Giovanni Battista Piranesi visited Pompeii on five occasions between 1770 and 1778. The various volumes of prints executed from drawings by him and his sons provide some of the earliest known views of areas of the site. They remain important today because they include features of the site that have long since disappeared.
