Scope and Content Note<br />

Charles François Mazois (1783-1826), a French architect, spent the years 1809-1811 in<br />

residence at the excavations at Pompeii. His stay culminated in a four-volume work Les<br />

Ruines de Pompéi, published in Paris from 1824-1838, which included his drawings and<br />

measurements of the site. This was the first extensive graphic work on Pompeii.<br />

<strong>Vander</strong> <strong>Poel</strong> initiated a course of general research on Mazois for an analysis and<br />

documentation of his work. He gained access to Mazois' original drawings for the work<br />

and he was particularly interested in documenting variations between the original and<br />

the printed versions of his plans and drawings.<br />

Includes summaries of various Bibliothèque nationale holdings connected with Mazois,<br />

three letters to <strong>Vander</strong> <strong>Poel</strong> from L. O. Ziegel (18 Apr 1974, 10 May 1974, 15 Jul 1974)<br />

concerning the research she is conducting for him, photocopies of biographical<br />

material, paging request cards, notes on slides and microfilm, summary of Les Ruines<br />

de Pompei from the Librairie Firman-Didot, lists of plates and general notes.<br />

Includes general research, manuscript of introduction for a work on Mazois,<br />

research on problems with the scales in Mazois' publication, biographical material,<br />

various drafts of a topographical analysis of Mazois and identifications of plates.<br />

Several letters were also included with this material: letter to <strong>Vander</strong> <strong>Poel</strong> from W.<br />

G. Eagleton (14 May 1980) who wants to sell a rare book; from <strong>Vander</strong> <strong>Poel</strong> to<br />

Molly (30 Jun 1980) with draft of introduction for Prof. Rivet's reaction; photocopy<br />

of letter from Jeremy Blake (22 Mar 1980) regarding the variance of scales in<br />

Mazois' plates; letter from Paul Williamson of the Victoria and Albert Museum (23<br />

Mar 1981) responding to query regarding Mazois' engraver; copy of letter from<br />
