6.3. Negotiating a connection
People need to communicate when they are having a shared experience with a remote
place. Words may not be the only way for communicating with a remote person, and that
is why we have experimented with different concepts to meet this situation. The
prototypes vary from feeling the remote person when co-‐controlling a cursor on a display,
to an awareness display that is used for negotiating a level of connection.
6.3.1. Collective Interaction
The idea of this concept is to create a tool
for collaborative navigation when viewing
pictures. This can either be with a co-‐
located or a remote person, when sharing
an experience of browsing through digital
material.
Collective Interaction (CI) is the name of a
prototype that we developed inspired by
our work around HiT, as it concerned
pictures from a vacation where the
scenario of coming home and showing the pictures were not as well supported in HiT. The
pictures taken on a trip are sometimes showed for others and we found this situation
interesting for multiple reasons. We analyzed the situation through scenarios and
identified a problem area around the situation of showing pictures to others.
On one hand there is the editing part that we identified as an area that could gain from
some automation. Instead of having to spend time on editing a presentation about a trip
we sought to make this step minimal so that it is possible to display right after the person
had returned. That is why we worked with tags and developed an iPhone application,
where it is possible to create tags for the pictures on the go. This makes it possible to
arrange the show in different categories and view a slideshow immediately after having
returned. The application was tested but not as automatic as we would like it to and we
decided to focus more on the negotiation that is taking place when viewing the slideshow.
CI is a tool for collaborate control of the viewing situation. The tool is used for either
browsing on a map where the pictures are geographically attached or used for flipping
through an image gallery, where it makes it possible to negotiate the time used on each
