Next step – ALC Awareness Ball The Ambient Live Connection Awareness Ball is created to indicate the level of connectedness with the remote place but also to call for attention when a remote person wants to share a media experience, when using ALC. The idea is that the silhouette illustrates with whom the connection takes place and the top ring indicates the remote level of sharing. The bottom ring shows your own status. The levels in ALC are: As prevailing in CI there is also a certain amount of negotiation taking place when using this artifact, as the shared experience is the lowest • Offline: Makes it possible to use the system without showing it to others or being notified about others. • Invisible: Makes it possible to listen to consume media in the system without showing it to others but at the same time being notified about what levels the others are at. • Visible: Makes it possible to listen to the music in the system while showing it to others and at the same time seeing what others are playing. 121
122 • Sharing: Makes it possible to share a media experience together with others also at Sharing. • Voice: Adding the possibility to talk together while sharing the media experience • Video 1-‐3: Adds a live video stream of the remote place in different sizes on the display. The idea is that the mechanical movement of the ring calls for attention in regards of getting the remote person to change their status. The icons are lightened up according to the level that the experience is currently at, being the lowest indicator, as the levels are only activated when both participants have passed the current level. It is also an awareness artifact that illustrates that there is a connection with a remote place and that Figure 21: The ball on the table represents the system of being able to share a media experience remotely. The design did not get further than to the conceptual stage, but elements were used in the next prototype that was designed for the same purpose when ALC had undergone some changes and mainly concerned a shared music experience. 6.3.4. My role with the Awareness Ball I created the design and the visualization of the ball. The concept and the rules of the interaction were created collectively with colleges in the research group.
