5.2. People in the study
This chapter is meant to give an overview of the people observed and interviewed. All
names have been replaced by pseudonyms. This chapter can be used as reference section
when reading about the findings in the later paragraphs.
In the planning of the study we attempted to get in touch with informants that could
represent a range of aspects in terms of approaches and conditions for homing. We
sought for people who have both chosen this lifestyle for themselves e.g. a businessman
as well as some who did not have a choice. e.g. the child of divorced parents. We also
looked for people who extend their mobility across countries as well as people who
commute more locally.
The first informant that we followed was a steward that we call Steven. He is originally
from New Zealand but is now living in UK with his wife and he has a son and ex-‐wife in
Denmark. His travel destinations with his work are Pasadena, USA and Hong Kong.
The second informant is a teenage girl, Lisa, who moves between her divorced parents
each week. The parents live in walking distance from each other and she has been
travelling between them for the past 5 years.
Third informant is a long distance commuter, Poul, who lives on an island with his wife
during the weekends and travels to his apartment in Copenhagen to work on weekdays.
The fourth informant is Wayne, a businessman from Denmark, currently living in London.
Wayne travels 200+ days a year around the world for business meetings and such.
The last informant in the fieldwalks is a family, Brian & Jane and their two children. They
travel between their city apartment and their holiday house half an hour away, where
they spend most of their weekends.
The second part of the study is interviews with B&O customers. The first interviews are
conducted in Denmark, were I visited two men in the thirties. I call them Frank and Jan.
Frank is in the real estate business and living with his girlfriend in his newly built dream
house. Jan works with technical solutions for the smart home and his home is his
playground where his wife and two children also live. I visit Jan both during the
construction process of the home and after the home is built two years later.
I interviewed three in Los Angeles, USA. First visit was the couple, Bob & Rae, around
their late 40’s in the clothing business. They do not have any children, and live in a
