“So this weekend in Beverly Hills. We like staying at the Peninsula. Haha, I mean
we’re crazy. (…) We have friends that come in so it’s kind of nice that we’re all

Instead of meeting with the friends at home, so nobody is the host and everybody can
relax. Sean does the same thing, going to a hotel in the hometown and he explains it as
leisure; whereas being home was almost work:
“We got people in the travelling industry and things are, they get special deals and
all sorts of things like that. So we tend to do that (go to a local hotel, ed.) here
because you are away. You still get all the finer things and you are not actually
running your house”–Sean
So the hassle of maintaining a home makes it work leads them to experience home in
other places, for instance at hotels in the same city, but also in distant locations. There is
also a tendency of externalizing the hosting part if the home is too small. Burhaan
explains how a large, new home will meet his needs for hosting parties and other social
gatherings in his home. This is outsourced until the new home is finished:
“What we do is that we tend to have once every three months gatherings outside of
this house because we were not ready to show it to everybody. What we tend to do is
that we will have a function at the Capital Club or we will book a hotel, or a
ballroom. (…) Times will all change because in the new house we would never have
to go out, it has been build that size so that we never have to entertain outside. (…)
Five different areas where people can feel comfortable. It could be a very easy
listening area, which we comprise of some family areas and some formal areas, you
can move away from there to another area. It’s very large entertainment house
basically.”
So the entertainment is elsewhere until the home evolves to be suitable to become a stage
for work.
1.3.5. Where do people make homely places?
These large homes are very important to the informants and their families –it is very
close to their heart and considerably a lot of money invested in it as well. They don’t
spend much time in the homes however, while they all work a great part of their time and
this makes the workplace feel like home in some cases. The large houses need a lot of
