is where the theories about space turned into place becomes interesting in the times
where home is deconstructed. According to Tuan, home is not limited to the built spaces
as Heidegger puts it. The making of places is a production of feeling at home. We can
experience the sense of home in multiple places, where we roothold and make
attachments. It is developed through the actions we do in different places. Place is
embodied according to the phenomenological geographer David Seamon (Seamon, 1979)
and Merleau-‐Ponty (Merleau-‐Ponty & Baldwin, 2004). This means that the place is
experienced through both the body and the mind at the same time. It becomes a process
of the habits we do with our body and the subject of place –the everyday encounters with
the physical place. We experience place by the unconscious actions that we do, when we
open a drawer, turn on the lights or walk over the door case. Body-‐subject knows what it
is doing unconsciously through the everyday movements that form the habits that take
place in familiar surroundings-‐ in place.
Vacher (Vacher, 2011) makes a distinction between house, real estate and home, where
home is something the inhabitants establish in relation to the body and relationships. The
feeling of home is established through repetitive rituals that make the house disappear
and become a connection with the body. In that way the relationship between house and
body becomes home, when you stop noticing the material and also stop bumping into it
with the body. Then home becomes an extension of the body. This notion of home is a
kind of doing, through the rituals and the continuation is extremely interesting for this
study. The limitations of this approach is that it only takes place inside a house and thus it
does not acknowledge that we are more mobile and that feeling at home can be
experienced in other places than inside the traditional notion of the home. Home is not as
stable as it used to be and it cannot be simplified to just being a house. We still make
sense of place even though home has changed character and we travel more.
