Wouter Hendriksen was born <strong>in</strong> Stad Delden on the 27 th of February 1978. With his<br />

parents Theo and Ineke and older brother Bas, he moved to Almelo at age four. After primary<br />

school, he went to the Pius X College <strong>in</strong> Almelo, where he obta<strong>in</strong>ed first his HAVO and then<br />

his VWO degree.<br />

In 1997 he started study<strong>in</strong>g Biology at the Rijksuniversiteit Gron<strong>in</strong>gen (RuG) <strong>in</strong><br />

Haren. Dur<strong>in</strong>g this study, he specialized <strong>in</strong> Molecular Biology, f<strong>in</strong>ish<strong>in</strong>g an <strong>in</strong>ternship <strong>in</strong> the<br />

group Molecular Microbiology (RuG) headed by Professor Arnold Driessen. The subject of<br />

this <strong>in</strong>ternship was ABC-transporters <strong>in</strong> Penicillium chrysogenum. His second <strong>in</strong>ternship was<br />

undertaken <strong>in</strong> Evanston, Ill<strong>in</strong>ois <strong>in</strong> the United States of America. Here, at the Chemical<br />

Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g department of the Northwestern University, he <strong>in</strong>vestigated the transcriptional<br />

regulator Spo0A of Clostridium acetobutylicum under supervision of Dr. Hendrik Bonarius<br />

and Professor E. Terry Papoutsakis. After these <strong>in</strong>ternships, he decided to write his<br />

“doctoraal” thesis under supervision of Professor Oscar Kuipers, head of the Molecular<br />

<strong>Gene</strong>tics department (RuG).<br />

After earn<strong>in</strong>g his MSc degree, he performed his PhD studies under supervision of<br />

Professor Peter Hermans and Professor Ronald de Groot. Dur<strong>in</strong>g this time he was a member<br />

of the Molecular Medic<strong>in</strong>e PhD committee for three years. At present, Wouter is Postdoc at<br />

the Institute of Biology, Leiden University, <strong>in</strong> the group of Dr. Paul van Heusden, where he<br />

studies the role of 14-3-3 prote<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> cation homeostasis <strong>in</strong> the yeast Saccharomyces<br />

cerevisiae.<br />
