Conditions The trial was carried out at Bywong Nursery, 159 Millynn<br />

Road, Bywong, NSW, <strong>Australia</strong> from Feb until Sep 2008.<br />

Cuttings of the three varieties were rooted and planted in a<br />

pine bark based potting mix containing a coated fertiliser in<br />

140mm pots.<br />

Trial Design Twelve replicates per variety were set out in a randomised<br />

block pattern under natural light in a polyhouse. Pest control<br />

was not required. One measurement per plant was taken.<br />

Measurements Leaf and petiole observations were taken from leaves half<br />

way along the stem. Flower colour and measurements were<br />

taken from a flower half way along the inflorescence on the<br />

first day of opening.<br />

Origin and Breeding<br />

Spontaneous mutation: In Oct 2004 a single plant with tri-coloured flowers was<br />

observed amongst a population of Hardenbergia violacea that all had normal purple<br />

flowers. Cuttings were taken from the plant, rooted at Junee and planted in the ground.<br />

Eight cuttings survived. Three further generations were propagated by cuttings in Jun<br />

2005 and in Nov 2005 and Oct 2007. Each generation was grown out and observed for<br />

stability of plant type and flower colour. Breeder: Courtney Peter Whitton, Junee,<br />
