Conditions <strong>Plant</strong>lets ex-quarantine raised from tissue cultures and planted<br />

into potting mix in 200mm diameter plastic pots on 1 Apr<br />

2008. Pots placed on benches in a screened polythene clad<br />

greenhouse. None of the varieties in trial produced flowers<br />

due to daylength conditions.<br />

Trial Design Randomised complete block design. Three replicates of 40<br />

plants per variety.<br />

Measurements Observations and measurements taken on 28 May 2008.<br />

Measurements taken of plant height, length of longest leaf,<br />

terminal leaflet length and width. Flower characteristics were<br />

compared using published UPOV information. Tuber<br />

characteristics were recorded in Aug 2008.<br />

Origin and Breeding<br />

Controlled pollination: maternal parent ‘Colleen’ and paternal parent ‘Estima’ were<br />

manually crossed in 1989 at Oak Park research centre, Carlow, Ireland. True seed was<br />

used to raise individual tubers of the resultant genetically different progeny. Seedling<br />

T491/3 selected after 12 years of clonal trials in the UK and Spain. Selection was<br />

based upon earliness, skin finish quality, disease resistance, yield and taste. The<br />

variety ‘Emma’ was released in 2003. Breeder: Teagasc Oak Park Research Centre,<br />

Carlow, Ireland.<br />
