Period Apr to Aug 2008. Conditions Plantlets ex-quarantine raised from tissue cultures and planted into potting mix in 200mm diameter plastic pots on 1 Apr 2008. Pots placed on benches in a screened polythene clad greenhouse. None of the varieties in trial produced flowers due to daylength conditions. Trial Design Randomised complete block design. Three replicates of 40 plants per variety. Measurements Observations and measurements taken on 28 May 2008. Measurements taken of plant height, length of longest leaf, terminal leaflet length and width. Flower characteristics were compared using published UPOV information. Tuber characteristics were recorded in Aug 2008. RHS Chart - edition Nil Origin and Breeding Controlled pollination: maternal parent ‘Rooster’ and paternal parent ‘Ambo’ were manually crossed in 1996 at Oak Park Research Centre, Carlow, Ireland. True seed was used to raise individual tubers of the resultant genetically different progeny. Seedling T2637-12 selected after 12 years of clonal trials in the UK and Spain. Selection was based upon earliness, skin finish quality, disease resistance, yield and taste. The variety ‘Romeo’ was released in 2007. Breeder: Teagasc Oak Park Research Centre, Carlow, Ireland.
