Conditions <strong>Plant</strong>lets ex quarantine raised from tissue cultures and planted<br />

into potting mix in 200mm diameter plastic pots on 1 Apr<br />

2008. Pots placed on benches in a screened polythene clad<br />

greenhouse. None of the varieties in trial produced flowers<br />

due to daylength conditions.<br />

Trial Design Randomised complete block design. Three replicates of 40<br />

plants per variety.<br />

Measurements Observations and measurements taken on 28 May 2008.<br />

Measurements taken of plant height, length of longest leaf,<br />

terminal leaflet length and width. Flower characteristics were<br />

compared using published UPOV information. Tuber<br />

characteristics were recorded in Aug 2008.<br />

Origin and Breeding<br />

Controlled pollination: Flower of maternal parent ‘Ulster Concorde’ emasculated and<br />

pollinated by pollen transferred from male parent DHS 70 116 37. Berries harvested<br />

and seed extracted. Seeds grown under protected conditions and one minituber<br />

harvested from each plant (= genotype). Minitubers planted in a field trial representing<br />

several thousands of unique genotypes. Tubers harvested from selected genotypes (by<br />

eye selection for tuber size, shape, maturity time and disease freedom. Tubers planted<br />

of selected genotypes for more intensive selection. Replicated and multi-site<br />

evaluation and selection trials conducted in the United Kingdom in subsequent years<br />

culminating in the selection of breeding line Ch1 for commercial release as ‘Chellah’.<br />
