1. Switch it off Electronic ”Soft starters” Electronic ”Soft starters” can reduce wear during start-up and can allow the motor to be switched on 2-4 times more often. You should therefore consider these if frequent starting occurs. Soft starting is a method of reducing the high starting current that occurs when a motor is first switched on by applying a reduced adjustable voltage. The voltage is then increased over a period of time to a value which allows the motor to accelerate smoothly to full speed. www.engine-sme.eu A soft start controller is a programmable electronic device which allows this period, the acceleration time, to be selected by the user and is dependent on the application and the desired starting characteristics.
2. Reducing motor load There is little point in improving the motor and its controls if the driven equipment is inefficient. Industrial motors are designed to operate at fixed speeds under a wide range of loads. Standard motors tend to reach efficiency at 80-100% of full load. Motor efficiency drops quickly when motors operate below 40% of full rated load. As a rule of thumb it can be said that at least one third of all integral horsepower motors are oversized for their loads. www.engine-sme.eu
