3. Maintenance Motors must be maintained on a regular basis to avoid efficiency losses and unnecessary cost intensive repairs. However, many motors, especially large or special types are repaired several times during their life. Proper care must therefore be given to the repair and maintenance process. All repairs must be to the original manufacturers specifications. Try to ensure your motor repairer provides you with certification for the repair and that the work is guaranteed. www.engine-sme.eu Give careful thought to the economics of repair versus cost of replacing with a new good quality higher efficiency motor.
4. Use motor control systems Variable Speed Drives (VSD). Basically these control the speed at which an a.c. induction motor runs. In addition to the possible large savings achieved by slowing the motor there are other advantages of using VSD: • Programmable soft starting, soft stopping and dynamic breaking. • Wide range of speed, torque and power. • Improved process control. • Controllable by a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) – very often found in industrial control situations. www.engine-sme.eu Using VSD is an important issue that you should examine for your organisation – the benefits are not just in energy savings.
