Buenas prácticas agrícolas para la adaptación al cambio climático Parte 1AbstractClimate change has begun to affect many aspects of life in Mesoamerica.Biodiversity will suffer the consequences and will play an important role inresponses to climate change: 1) adaptation, 2) migration, or 3) extinction. Inlight of the rapid rate of this change, most organisms will either migrate orbecome extinct. Past evidence of migration in response to global changeindicates that migration is a population-level rather than community-levelphenomenon, causing dramatic ecosystem changes. In terms of increasingthe response function of biodiversity to climate change, regional effortsmust be made to ensure connectivity. Biodiversity also contributes to thefunctioning of ecosystems. Altering biological communities alters theircapacity to provide critical ecosystem services. Adaptation to climatechange must urgently take into consideration the ecological dimensionsof climate change and the effects that this change may have on thosespecies that are critical in agricultural systems. One of the simplest formsof adaptation is strongly tied to conservation goals: protect biodiversityand ensure species movement within an agricultural matrix. More complexforms of adaptation involving biodiversity include selecting and formingspecies assemblages capable of providing services in the face of climatechange. This latter option, however, is risky and requires both intimateknowledge of species roles in agroecosystems and the ability to forecastregional effects of climate change.Key words: species, vegetation, ecosystems services, natural environments,disturbance24
