The town has monuments that bear
witness to the history of Madagascar
ANTSIRANANA
Découverte en 1500 par des marins portugais, son tout
premier nom fut Antomboko. Le nom Diego-Suarez a
été hérité des deux navigateurs Diego Diaz et Fernand
Suarez. Dans la ville se trouvent des monuments qui
témoignent l’histoire de Madagascar. En effet, elle était
une ancienne garnison française où des vestiges de la
colonisation sont encore visibles de nos jours comme
«Le tribunal D’architecture classique», construit en
1903-1909. En 1900, le Maréchal Joffre amène 9000
hommes pour attirer les femmes, il réorganisa ensuite
la ville dont la fortification autour de la baie. Une statue
en son hommage fut construite en 1933, un œuvre du
sculpteur Raymond Sucre. Ville cosmopolite, le nom
Antsiranana d’aujourd’hui signifie «Le lieu où les gens
n’ont pas la même origine». Antsiranana fait partie de la
Région DIANA, avec Ambilobe, Nosy Be et Ambanja.
Discovered in 1500 by Portuguese sailors, its original
name was Antomboko. It was then named Diego-Suarez
after two navigators: Diego Diaz and Fernand Suarez. The
town has monuments that bear witness to the history of
Madagascar. It is a former French garrison, with remains
of colonisation still visible today, such as the classical
architecture court, constructed in 1903-1909.
In 1900, the French Marshal Joffre brought in
9,000 men who would attract women, after which
he reorganised the town, including the fortifications
around the bay. A statue to him, the work of the sculptor
Raymond Sucre, was erected in 1933. A cosmopolitan
town, today’s name of Antsiranana means ‘the place
where people are not of the same origin’. Along
with Ambilobe, Nosy Be and Ambanja, the town of
Antsiranana is situated in the region of Diana.
