Au sud-ouest de Madagascar, Morombe<br />

est installée sur le canal de Mozambique.<br />

Situé à environ 200km au nord de Tuléar,<br />

dans la région d’Atsimo Andrefana, cet<br />

endroit unique serti de plages de sable<br />

blanc et de forêts de mangroves, bénéficie<br />

des plus beaux lagons et des plus<br />

importantes barrières de corail au monde.<br />

Sa faune et sa flore comptent plusieurs espèces<br />

endémiques. Les forêts de mangroves, caractéristiques<br />

de la région, abritent de nombreuses espèces<br />

d’oiseaux, dont le coua de Coquerel (Coua coquereli),<br />

le vanga de Lafresnaye (Xenopirostris xenopirostris), le<br />

drongo malgache ou Railovy (Dicrurus forficatus). Elles<br />

abritent également plusieurs espèces de lémuriens<br />

dont le Sifaka, le Maki, et le Microcèbe. Dans les dunes<br />

de sable qui bordent les plages de la ville, poussent<br />

cactus et autres plantes grasses adaptées aux milieux<br />

arides, et vivent caméléons, boas et couleuvres. La ville<br />

compte également plusieurs types de baobabs.<br />

Les eaux calmes et peu profondes des lagons<br />

sont couvertes de coraux qui servent de refuge aux<br />

poissons-clowns, aux poissons-papillons et aux<br />

poissons-perroquets. Les amateurs de plongée seront<br />

grandement récompensés.<br />

Morombe is a town on the south-west<br />

coast of Madagascar, on the Mozambique<br />

Channel. Situated about 200km north of<br />

Tuléar, in the region of Atsimo Andrefana,<br />

it is a unique location boasting the most<br />

stunning lagoons and the largest coral<br />

reefs in the world. Its location, is also,<br />

enhanced by magnificent white sandy<br />

beaches, as well as its rich mangroves.<br />

Morombe has very diverse fauna and flora, with<br />

several of Madagascar’s endemic species present. The<br />

mangrove forests, characteristic of the region, shelter<br />

several species of birds, including Coquerel’s coua<br />

(Coua coquereli), Lafresnaye’s vanga (Xenopirostris<br />

xenopirostris), the crested drongo or Railovy (Dicrurus<br />

forficatus). Several species of lemurs, such as the<br />

ring-tailed lemur and the grey mouse lemur live in<br />

the surrounding forests. In the sand dunes behind the<br />

town’s beaches there are varied species of plants such<br />

as cacti and other flora adapted to arid dunes. Reptiles<br />

including chameleons and snakes (boas and grass<br />

snakes) can be seen here. Several types of baobab also<br />

grow in the town.<br />

Morombe is unique for its natural environment<br />

on land, but also at sea. The town’s lagoons are<br />

characterised by their calm shallow waters. The seabed<br />

of the lagoons, with its covering of corals, is a refuge<br />

for clownfish, butterflyfish and parrotfish. Anyone<br />

who goes diving will be rewarded by the wealth of the<br />

undersea life around Morombe.<br />
