The first treatment with theVero was carried out on 8th November 2011.The head physician of Radiotherapy in theSant'Anna, Professor Dorian Cosentino, explainsthe equipment to the readers of MagicLake: «Radiotheraphy has had a tumultuousprogress in the last few years, 20 years ago itwas just possible to irradiate a static neoplastictarget, now the flexibility of the linear acceleratorhas incredibly increased, thanks notto the mechanics, which is mainly unchanged,but above all to the development of theoperating system. The precursors of the Verowere the Tomo Therapy and the Cyberknife,anyway the Vero collects the previous experiencesand besides allowing all the possibletreatments with the previous equipment, it isable to define the neoplastic target with highdegrees, so that it can “carve” the irradiantdose. Since the management software is stillbeing implemented, the equipment potentialshave to be evaluated and new treatmenttechniques are to be developed. To get themaximum possible information from the dataavailable, it is necessary to have not just a regionalbut a larger coordination and an intensecollaboration among the different Italianand foreign centers, in order to set the studyguidelines. In the use on the patients we havealready been able to verify that the equipmentresponds to the expectations getting the maximumprotection of the healthy tissues tofight the cancer cells. A great news regardingthis treatment is the possibility to use the stereotaxicradiotherapy, which not only consistsin the simultaneous treatment of neoplastichotbeds, but also in the control of the directand indirect movements of the cancer and thehealthy structures, carrying out the so-calledcancer tracking. The patients who undergothis treatment are those who need an exclusiveradiotherapy treatment, in particular forprostate, head and neck, lung and encephaloncancer». Professor Cosentino ends the interviewremembering that there are differentstudy protocol which can allow the possibilityto write some guidelines for the optimal use ofthe equipment.95
