Goegap Nature reserve, Springbok "Why would anybody in his right mind visit Goegap when it is not in the flower season, and go on a hiking trail, 4x4 route or mountain bike ride in December? " "The answer is twofold: to experience the serene tranquility and isolation in close symbiosis with this area rich in human and archaeological history and, secondly, to look close enough and be surprised at the abundance of fauna and flora still around although the plains are not covered in flowers." The Goegap Nature Reserve, under control of the Department of Environment and Nature Conservation, Northern Cape, is situated 15 km South East of Springbok. This is a "must-visit" for nature lovers and 4x4 enthusiasts, in all seasons, and has routes for sedan vehicles as well as 2 - 4 rated 4x4 routes. The camping area in the park is clean and well looked after, at an extremely reasonable fee. The intention of this article on the Goegap Nature Reserve is to indicate the attraction and characteristics of the reserve throughout all the seasons of the year. Namaqualand and the reserve is well-known for its attraction in the flower season, but little emphasis is placed on the unique and special characteristics as nature progresses through the www.springbokinfo.co.za/Naturereserves.htmearly cycle. Try not to become a man of success but a man of value. ~Albert Einstein We visited the Goegap camping site for 3 nights in early December 2011. It is situated close to the entrance gate, with a beautiful view across 20 the end of the local airstrip to the distant koppies. Apart from an overseas couple on the first night, we had the campsite to ourselves. Maximum and minimum temperatures were mild, and the wind in the sheltered campsite area was comfortable most of the time. What surprised us the most was the abundance of colorful flowers if you look close enough. The photos that we took certainly did not reflect a bleak, harsh environment! The camping area in the park is clean and well looked after, at an extremely reasonable fee. Accommodation and daily fees are REALLY very low. In fact, we will be surprised if you can do better for what you are getting here. Although there is no electricity, gas geysers are available in the neat and tidy ablution block. The caravan and tent stands have reed covered shelters against the sun, as well as elevated individual braai blocks. Typically of this area there is no grass underneath and a ground sheet is recommended. For those requiring a bit more comfort there are elementary huts available with 4 single beds closer to the dry riverbed with more shady trees. Little free-standing ablution blocks serve these huts on an individual basis. There is certainly enough to see and experience even in December! I was too slow to take a photo of the Gemsbok that entered the campsite during our stay! From a weather point of view it is worth noting that in Springbok the highest average midday and night-time temperatures occur during February, with January being a close second. December and January are recorded as the months with the lowest (for all practical purposes none) average rainfall. Average maximum temperatures are in the low thirties. Springbok is under the influence of the cold Atlantic Ocean lying only 80 km to the West in a straight line. Tierhoek Camping Site Richtersveld Community CONSERVANCY This place is isolated and private, with no easy roads leading to it if you are in a hurry. You don't need a 4x4 to get there and back, but you have to do at least 100 km in either direction on really bad dirt roads to get there. The rewards for your endeavor are ample, and the price tag is as low as you will get anywhere in Southern Africa. You can work on R50 ZAR per person per day (January 2012) The adventure and exhilaration of being there, apart from the esthetical beauty, lies in the (unrealistic) expectation that the Nama predecessors will appear at any moment in the cave, that a leopard will visit you during the night if you sleep without a tent just on your mattress in the cave, and that the unthinkable will happen in that the loosely balanced rocks that have been doing their delicate balancing act for centuries will come loose and flatten you at the exact point in time that you spend there! :-) If you are looking for an extreme 4 x 4 challenge, and suffer from the "I've seen a lion" syndrome, then Tierhoek is not for you. This part of the world does however offer unique plant species, tranquility, isolation and clear skies. Photographers will find ample opportunities to capture imaginative images and you can go for long walks or do a bit of mountaineering. A unique characteristic of Tierhoek is that you can be there on the warmest day of the year, and yet experience the cool breeze in the shady cave that allows airflow from any direction. The rocks above you block out the heat of the sun completely. Don't expect luxuries and comfort though. There are no electricity, water and cell phone reception. The 2 cement dams are dry, and the 2 long drop toilets are life threatening in itself. One has already toppled over and the other one gives you the feeling that you are going to fall into an endless stinking hole at any point in time. Rely rather on your own spade, and remember to burn the toilet paper afterwards! Make sure that you take enough ice, water and fuel with you - these are commodities not readily available in the Richtersveld Conservancy. The camp site is safe from crime and intruders - it is simply too far and isolated from criminal city life. You will be extremely lucky (or unlucky) if you see any other (living) human being in the time that you spend there. How to get there Via Kuboes - Reach Kuboes from Sendelingsdrift or Alexander Bay, then enter the Conservancy at point "A" on the map. (Easy although rough dirt roads in places - no 4 x 4 required). Via Lekkersing - Approach the entry point "A" on the maps via Lekkersing following the dirt road from the Steinkopf - Port Nolloth tar road. Via Eksteenfontein - Reach Eksteenfontein along the Helskloof Pass from Vioolsdrift or along the dirt road from the Steinkopf - Port Nolloth tar road, then enter the Conservancy at point "C" on the maps. (Although not impossible in a 2 x 4 bakkie, you'll progress easier with a 4 x 4. When it‘s wet you will definitely need a 4 x 4.)
