It is an interest-free loan. It must be paid back, usually through deductions from benefits.<br />

You need to apply at your local Jobs and Benefits Office.<br />

To be entitled, you or your partner must:<br />

have been receiving either Income Support, Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance,<br />

Income-related Employment and Support Allowance or Pension Credit for 26 weeks<br />

before the date of application;<br />

need help with certain important expenses such as the cost of furniture, clothing,<br />

footwear, advance payments of rent, removal expenses, home improvements etc.<br />

2.10.4 What payments should you apply for if you urgently need cash?<br />

If you are waiting for a benefit payment to be made, a Crisis Loan might be most suitable.<br />

If you are receiving a benefit, the Community Care Grant is likely to be best.<br />

If you have been in Northern Ireland under the VPR scheme for more than 26 weeks,<br />

consider a budgeting loan.<br />

All these payments can be made very quickly.<br />

2.10.5 Sure Start Maternity Grant<br />

This is a one off grant of £500. It does not need to be paid back. It is payable for the first<br />

child to parents in receipt of certain benefits. You must claim within 11 weeks of the baby’s<br />

due date or within three months after the baby’s birth. You need to request claim form<br />

SF100 from your local Jobs and Benefits Office.<br />

This grant does not affect other benefits or tax credits.<br />

2.10.6 Cold weather payment<br />

In periods of very cold weather, you may receive a payment of £25 a week from the Jobs<br />

and Benefits Office if you are in receipt of certain benefits. Payment is made automatically<br />

so you don’t need to apply. It does not need to be paid back.<br />

2.10.7 Winter fuel payment<br />

This is a payment to persons born on or before 5 January 1953 who are in receipt of certain<br />

benefits. The amount paid is affected by your personal circumstances. It does not need to<br />

be paid back. You can check if you are eligible by calling: 034 5915 1515.<br />

2.10.8 Free school meals<br />

You can apply for free school meals for your school age children if:<br />

you receive Income Support, Income-related Employment and Support Allowance,<br />

Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, guarantee element of Pension Credit, Child Tax<br />

Credit (not Working Tax Credit) with an income of less than £16,190; or if you receive<br />

Working Tax Credit with an income of less than £16,190 where the child is at nursery or<br />

primary school only; and<br />

your child is a full time student at school. This includes sixth form students and full time<br />

nursery pupils (there are other limited categories).<br />
