7.9 What about travelling to other parts of the UK?<br />
You are allowed to travel to other parts of the UK (England, Scotland and Wales), as long as<br />
you can show residence valid passport or other Travel Document (see chapter 1: Living in<br />
the UK, paragraph 1.5) at airports and ports.<br />
7.10 What are the legal requirements for driving in Northern Ireland?<br />
You must comply with the following requirements if you wish to drive in Northern Ireland:<br />

Driving licence – you must have a valid licence for the type of vehicle that you are<br />
driving.<br />
Note: you can drive with a full licence issued by a different country or with an<br />
international driving permit for a maximum of 12 months from the date of your arrival in<br />
Northern Ireland. During this time, you should apply for a NI driving license. You can only<br />
drive vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes and with up to eight passenger seats.<br />
Insurance – insurance is a legal requirement in the UK and each driver, not the vehicle,<br />
must be insured separately for a named car.<br />
Your motor vehicle must also have:<br />

A vehicle licence or road tax – you can get this from your local Driver and Vehicle<br />
Agency offices and some post offices.<br />
A vehicle test certificate (known as MOT) – you can book a test from the Driver and<br />
Vehicle Agency.<br />

Every person in a car or other motor vehicle must wear a seat belt when travelling unless a<br />
doctor has certified that a medical condition prevents him or her from doing so.<br />
If the police officer has reason to believe that you are driving under the influence of alcohol<br />
or illegal drugs he/she is entitled to ask for a sample of breath, blood or urine. The police<br />
officer must keep a written record of the sampling.<br />
7.11 Your political representatives<br />
People in Northern Ireland under the Vulnerable Persons Relocation Scheme are not<br />
entitled to vote in the UK.<br />
However, you are entitled to ask your political representatives to help you if you encounter<br />

A European Parliamentary election is held every five years to choose Members of the<br />
European Parliament (MEPs). Three MEPs are chosen to represent Northern Ireland.<br />
Local government elections are held every four years to decide who represents the<br />
community in your local District Council. The representatives are known as Councillors.<br />
Elections to the Northern Ireland Assembly are to be held every four years. The<br />
representatives are known as Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs).<br />
