7. Policing and other legal issues
7.1 What is the police service in Northern Ireland?
The organisation responsible for policing in Northern Ireland is called the Police Service of
Northern Ireland (PSNI). Both female and male officers wear dark green uniform with white
shirts with green caps. All officers are routinely armed.
7.2 How can I contact the police?
In an emergency, telephone 999 or 112
In non-emergency cases, telephone 101
7.3 Being stopped by a police officer
If you are stopped and searched by a police officer, an interpreter should be provided if you
need one.
If you have been stopped and searched by police, you must be given a copy of the written
search record that informs you of the reason and purpose of the search.
Police officers normally wear name badges and a unique personal shoulder number. You
might wish to note these details if you need to speak to the officer again or wish to make a
complaint.
Police officers must not treat you differently from any other individual on the grounds of
your race, nationality or colour. The police are only allowed to use force which is
proportionate and reasonable in carrying out their lawful duties.
7.4 What involvement does the Police Service have in immigration control?
In Northern Ireland the Police Service is not formally involved in enforcing immigration
control. A police officer should not normally ask to see your passport or any other
documentation proving your right to be in the UK.
Occasionally you may be required to show the police your identification and you may wish
to show your passport.
If you are suspected to have committed an offence and you do not have any form of
identification with you, the police officer, in certain circumstances, is entitled to arrest you
until he/she is satisfied that you are who you say you are.
7.5 What are my rights if I am arrested by the police?
If you have been arrested by the police or are being questioned regarding your suspected
involvement in an offence, you have certain rights.
A police officer must caution you in the following terms:
‘You do not have to say anything, but I must caution you that if you do not mention when
questioned something which you later rely on in court, it may harm your defence. If you do
say anything it may be given in evidence.’
If you are arrested and taken to a police station, you should be provided with an interpreter
if you need one.
