„Markante Linienführung“
“Striking sporty lines”
When asked for her favourite interior detail, Adriana
Balko doesn’t hesitate long. “The two-tone steering
wheel in the Edition 1 is something very special, almost extravagant,
even” admits the interior designer. “But that was
our intention all along: the interior of the new C-Class Coupés
was supposed to surprise.” The 32-year-old works in the
Colour & Trim department, developing new interior concepts
and materials that she follows through from the initial idea
all the way to implementation.
“In the case of the C-Class Coupé, the emphasis was on
details that would have a big impact” explains the trained
fashion designer. “The result is a discreet but very sporty
look that doesn’t come over as being too ‘in your face’.” The
minor details with major impact include, for example, the organically
shaped trim element along the dashboard, extending
from the central trapezoidal air vents almost as far as the
sportily round vent on the front-passenger side. On the “Edition
1” introductory model and on Coupés featuring the Style
package, this option is in porcelain piano-lacquer look. “We
had a light piano-lacquer look on the Maybach once, but it’s a
completely new idea in this segment”, according to Balko.
The switch strip below the new-generation head unit similarly
catches the eye: the galvanised surface gives this element
a high-quality and unique finish. The detailing on the
various air vents has also been picked out in galvanised trim.
Further distinctive details in the interior of the Edition 1
include the light-coloured contrasting stitching on the seats,
which underlines the high-quality feel, while integrated
head restraints on both front and rear seats help to convey
a dynamic impression.
All in all, the striking and distinctly sporty lines of the
exterior have been continued in the interior. Both the door
panels and the rear side panels pick up the shape of the Coupé’s
silhouette. The beltline, optionally available in a darker
shade to contrast to the door lining, widens towards the front.
Together with the generously proportioned trim element and
the upper edge of the central door panels, this adds up to the
overall dynamic and forward-thrusting effect.
The dashboard has a strong horizontal emphasis at several
levels. On the upper level, a sweeping hood shelters the instrument
cluster and central display unit. Three-dimensional
galvanised tube rings in the instrument cluster emphasise
the vehicle’s sporty flair. The sweep of the front edge of the
hood follows through along a fine, light-catching contour towards
the front passenger side.
The ergonomic 3-spoke steering wheel underlines the
Coupé’s sporty appeal, as does the fact that “The steering
wheel and shift/selector lever are in nappa leather, in all
trims”, as Adriana Balko explains. That too is a small detail
with a major impact ... •
