watch the work in progress
there’s a tremendous difference between building an
AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine and tinkering around with a
Polo engine” laughs Kai-Hagen Bühner, when asked about his
previous job. Until joining AMG, the now 25-year-old was
working in a Volkswagen workshop. Oil changes, services,
repairs – all the routine stuff, basically. Towards the end of
2007, a job advert brought the young mechatronics technician
to AMG, since when things have been very different.
Clinical levels of cleanliness and subdued calm in place of
the dirt, noise and stress of a typical workshop environment.
The very best prerequisites for top quality in the production
of AMG high-performance engines. “One man, one engine”
is the long-established AMG philosophy. Contrary to
common practice in volume production, here just one technician
is responsible for a single complete engine – from inserting
the crankshaft right through to the final wiring. It’s a
method that originates from the world of motor racing, where
AMG has its roots – and where of course precision at the very
highest level can determine between triumph and disaster.
The awareness that he is building the most powerful engines
in the world is what motivates Kai-Hagen Bühner each
day afresh. “It really does make me proud when I read the
test reports in the motoring magazines, where the journalists
wax lyrical about our AMG M156 engine. Or when our foreman
reports that an AMG engine has been voted ‘Engine of
600 Nm
the year’ again”, says the 25-year-old, who keeps fit in his
free time by cycling.
Groups of admiring visitors pass by the work stations of
Bühner and his colleagues at regular intervals. “Sometimes
they clap, or a really keen AMG customer might enquire after
my name and then come up to me in person to thank me for
the great engine that I built for him. That’s quite special”, relates
Bühner with a sense of satisfaction, even emotion. And
of course there’s the AMG engine plate: “In the cold light of
day, it’s just a square piece of metal, but of course the engine
plate is a real motivation for us. I’m quite sure that every single
one of us here in Factory 4 is proud to see their name on a
finished engine.”
Asked to nominate his dream car, the answer from Kai-
Hagen Bühner comes quite spontaneously, without much
pause for thought at all: “The SLS AMG! Although I think the
gull-wing model might be rather wasted on the daily commute
to work. So I’ll go for the new C 63 AMG Coupé instead.” •
