Germany, the C 63 AMG Coupé is the family member we’ve been missing.” In fact, virtually every
second AMG built is already a C 63. The company is already achieving excellent sales figures
with the C 63 AMG, especially in the growth markets. As Källenius says: “AMG customers in
China have now discovered that you can have just as much fun at the wheel of a C 63 AMG as you
can sitting in the back of an S 65 AMG.” He anticipates a further boost to sales growth from the
Coupé: “Traditionally, the Saloon has represented the lion’s share of worldwide sales, and I expect
the new Coupé to take second place now, followed by the Estate.” Does he think the improvements
in efficiency will play a role, too? “Absolutely. With immediate effect, we will be using the unique
AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission across the whole C 63 AMG range. This is
the major factor behind the reduction in fuel consumption, although the new, more efficient power
steering pump can also share the credit. NEDC fuel consumption of 12.0 litres per 100 kilometres
puts us on equal terms with our competitors, even though the C 63 AMG Coupé has a larger
engine that offers higher output as well as torque. The 6.3-litre V8 of our M156 engine range is
at the high point of its career, having won the coveted ‘Engine of the year awards’ twice in
succession. In conjunction with the MCT transmission, it is now even more sporty and efficient.
A reduction of 1.4 litres, on average, compared with the pre-facelift model generation is
something that others don’t even manage when they introduce a completely new vehicle.” The
tuning of the suspension is also new: “The C 63 AMG has a suspension system all of its own,
from the axles, kinematics and track width, right through to the spring and damper tuning.
Our engineers have ratcheted things up once again. And it’s not only the driving dynamics that
have benefited, but also the ride comfort. That’s typical of my AMG team: making something
already good even better, and raising the benchmark still further, is what spurs them on.” •
