body construction is a team effort“, says Dr Joachim
Betker, before going on to explain: “The bodyshop will
only ever be able to start supply to the production line on
time if there is effective coordination between design,
development and production and if, for their part, the systems
engineers and maintenance teams in the plant work
closely together.” This is particularly true in the case of the
C-Class Coupé, an additional model that has had to be integrated
into the existing production line. “A start-up of this
nature is both a sprint and a marathon, demanding quick
and good decision-making as well as plenty of stamina.”
parts, lay them into the appropriate jigs, apply adhesive
and make spot welds, stand at the final end of this chain.
At the heart of things are the people, their ability and
their willingness to work together. “You can sense both
these things, here in Bremen – the Daimler spirit, that
has been bringing innovations into series production for
125 years now, and a very special Bremen team spirit, that
is always trying to show the mother plant in Sindelfingen
just what can be done”, says Betker.
As Head of Body Shell Production for the C-Class
Coupé, he is also very conscious of his responsibility: “The
body shell is the basis for the complete car. Whether
we’re talking about crash performance or durability, about
„Karosserie ist die Basis für alles“ dr.
“The body shell is the basis for everything”
dimensional accuracy or handling, the quality is determined
very early on – every single part of the car has
a link to the body shell.” Finish and surface quality are
also pre-determined in the vast production hall with its
heavy machine tools. “Mercedes-Benz quality involves
getting every part through the bodyshop without its surface
being damaged.” Betker is very familiar with the
other end of the process as well, having been responsible
for the paint shop for the SL-Roadster, also built in
Bre men, before taking on his current role. “As far as
I’m concerned, the two-door models built in Bremen are
Mercedes-Benz’s finest cars – and the new Coupé is
a wonderful addition to that line-up.” •
