Bestehen zeugt aber auch von dem damaligen
Wohlstand der Stadt und der Kontakte
seiner Bürger mit anderen Teilen Europas.
Im Danziger Hafen fand nicht nur ein Warenaustausch,
sondern auch Kulturaustausch
statt.
Das von Renato Rizzi entworfene neue
Theatergebäude wird ein besonderes Kunstwerk
sein. Seine Architektur ähnelt der einer
Fechtkunstschule, die einst der Theatersitz
war. Ein Schiebedach und eine zentral gelegene
Bühne gibt dem Publikum die Möglichkeit,
die Vorführungen so zu erleben, wie
es in den Shakespeare-Zeiten üblich war.
Außer der Rolle des Veranstaltungstheaters
wird es auch die Rolle einer Kulturstelle und
eines Konferenzzentrums übernehmen, d.h.
seine Nutzung wird sich nicht nur an Aufführungen
beschränken. Das Theatergabäude
wird mit Sicherheit zu einer touristischen Attraktion
und einem wichtigen Platz auf der
kulturellen Karte des Kontinents.

Apart from its normal role, the theater will

Gdańsk is not only a former Hanseatic port
but also one of the most important cities in
the modern history of Poland. The attack of
Nazi Germany on the Polish military base in
Westerplatte in the morning on Sep 1, 1939
is considered to be the official beginning of
the WWII.
Despite the war’s destruction and the frequent
exchange of population, Gdańsk has never abandoned
the concept of the open and free city.
