To be exact, 10,050 TEU were packed at theTCO I terminal located at Auf der Hohen Schaar lastyear. About half of this volume was accounted for bythe heavy-lift segment, a business that is well understoodat TCO. In Anwesenheitdes Ersten Bürgermeisters Ole von Beust wurden am16. Januar zwei neue Hallen in Betrieb genommen.Insgesamt verfügt die Anlage jetzt über Lagerkapazitätenfür 405.000 t. Mit der Erweiterung optimiert die K+S-Logistiktochter KTG ihren Lager- und Umschlagbetriebam Kalikai und stärkt auch die Bedeutung des <strong>Hamburg</strong>er<strong>Hafen</strong>s, zu dessen seewärtigem Massengutumschlagsie rund zehn Prozent beiträgt. Die bisherigenKapazitäten genügten immer weniger den wachsendenAnforderungen der K+S Gruppe, einer der weltweitführenden Anbieter von Mineraldüngern, Düngemittelspezialitätenund Salzen. Zwischenzeitlich musstendaher vermehrt Kapazitäten in anderen Seehäfen genutztwerden. KTG hat rund 10 Mio. Euro in das Erweiterungsprojektinvestiert, das in zwei jeweils 75 m langenHallen Platz für 80.000 t schafft. Insgesamt wurden seit1990 rund 40 Mio. Euro für Erweiterungen, Innovationenund Optimierungen am Kalikai aufgewandt. In thepresence of <strong>Hamburg</strong> Mayor Ole von Beust, two newhalls were commissioned on 16 January. The site nowhas a storage capacity for 405,000 t. This expansionallows the K+S logistics subsidiary KTG to optimise itsstorage and handling operations at the Kalikai, and italso boosts the importance of the Port of <strong>Hamburg</strong> inthat it adds around ten per cent to the port’s watersidebulk cargo handling capacity. The existing capacitieshad proven less and less adequate for the growing needsof the K+S Group, one the world’s leading providers ofmineral fertilisers, fertiliser specialties and salts. Thismeant that capacities in other seaports had to be utilisedincreasingly in the meantime. KTG invested aroundEUR 10 million in this expansion project, building two75-m halls that can hold 80,000 t. Since 1990, a totalof EUR 40 million has been spent at the Kalikai facilityon expansion, innovation and optimisation measures.The new buildings represent a further increase in the30 <strong>PORT</strong> <strong>OF</strong> <strong>HAMBURG</strong> MAGAZINE 1/08
capacity of cargo handling operations, which alreadyhandle around 4 million t of dry bulk cargoes, eitherloose or in containers. The state-of-the-art technicalfacilities allows personnel at the Kalikai to achievedaily throughputs of up to 45,000 t, making it possibleto process even large orders in minimum time. KTGis an important link in the logistics chain for the K+SGroup. As a ‘gateway to the world’ for the overseasbusiness, but also for links with Scandinavia, theUK, France and in the Mediterranean, it provides theGroup with great flexibility and proximity to customers,thus boosting the competitiveness of the groupof companies. The Kalikai terminal in <strong>Hamburg</strong>-Wilhelmsburg is used to export the K+S Group’sspecial fertiliser products, and for handling fertilizersand grain for other companies. KTG providesadditional logistics services through its subsidiariesGerman Bulk Chartering (GBC) and UBT See- und<strong>Hafen</strong>spedition.
