Radiographic knee osteoarthritis and
self-reported knee complaints in fl oor layers and carpenters
Lilli Kirkeskov Jensen, MD PhD
Background
During many years workers from the
construction industry have had knee
disorders, but none of them had their
disorders accepted as an occupational
disorder and many were unable to work
because of their knee troubles. Earlier
studies had shown an increased risk for
knee osteoarthritis (OA) among miners
[1, 2], pipe fi tters [3] and welders [4, 5]
and some occupations seemed to have
a high prevalence of prepatellar bursitis
[6-8].
This study was carried out between 1993
and 1995 on fl oor layers with high knee
demands, carpenters with moderate knee
demands and a control group of graphic
designers without kneeling work activities.
The research questions were:
Is there a relationship between work
with knee-straining work activities,
self-reported knee complaints, and
radiological fi ndings of knee osteoarthritis?
Is there a relationship between selfreported
knee complaints, clinical
fi ndings, and radiological knee osteoarthritis?
 Is there a dose-response-relationship
between work with knee demanding
work activities and self-reported knee
complaints and/or radiographic knee
osteoarthritis?
This paper is based on results from papers
from 2000 and 2005 based on the same
study which took place in the period
1993-1995/1996 in the Area of Copenhagen,
Denmark. The whole project
consisted of:
1. A review of earlier literature on occupational
knee disorders [9],
2. Exposure measurements by videorecordings
on the knee demands in
fl oor layers, and carpenters [10, 11],
3. Questionnaire study on self-reported
musculoskeletal disorders in fl oor
layers, carpenters, and compositors
[10],
4. Clinical examination on a selected part
of the questionnaire responders[10],
and
5. Radiological examination on a selection
of the study population[12, 13].
Methods
General description of the three trades
Floor layers and carpet layers install linoleum,
carpet, and vinyl fl oorings. The work
tasks include removal of old fl oorings,
grinding, fi lling, installation of underlay,
measuring and cutting of materials, gluing,
welding and installation of skirting
board (fi gure 1, page 72).
