LIMITATIONS
• Selective treatment of patients with physically
demanding jobs (but >85% of cases beyond normal
retirement age)
• Incomplete response in controls (but risk estimates
unaltered by adjustment for social class)
• Differential recall (but no association with sitting or
driving, and no differential reporting in exposed
occupations)
• Changes in occupation because of early symptoms
(but restricted analysis to jobs >10 years before
entry to study)
CONCLUSIONS
• Findings support a hazard of knee
osteoarthritis from occupational kneeling/
squatting
• Risk approximately doubled for >1 hour day
over ≥ 1 year, and higher with concomitant
heavy lifting
• No clear gradation of risk with longer
durations of exposure
