like this they are not using the hand to
support. They are not squatting at all. If
they are doing something they are standing
on the knees without hand support.
For carpenters they do the work in a quite
different way. They are squatting a lot.
They are standing on knees and they are
curling on knees but there is a small part
of the time they are kneeling on both
knees. So there is another way of doing
the work. And it diverts a lot between
workers in the trade how they did it
because they have back pain, they maybe
were crawling more and if they do not
have back pain they were forward bending
for example when making some of the
things at the fl oor. So it diverts a lot.

If you have a worker within the construction
you nearly always fi nd people who
are have a combination of kneeling and
lifting. You do not fi nd people who are
only kneeling or are only lifting. If you take
a fl oor layer or you take a carpenter – they
have a combination of lifting around one

in some degree. So if you are trying to
split the exposure you make failure about
it because you can not split it.

In Denmark in 2005 they accepted the
knee-osteoarthritis in the list of the
occupational disorders, when the people
have been working 20 to 25 years with
kneeling four hours a day/half the day. Or
if you calculate in an other way you can
say: a fl oor layer who is kneeling 50 % of
the time as shown in the videotaping. It
is around 15 to 16 years of the kneeling
before they have accepted the osteoarthritis.
In 2006 they were discussing if other
exposures could be accepted on the list as
heavy lifting and stair climbing and they
did not accept other exposures than kneeling.
