Süßkartoffel
Sweet Potatoe
Süßkartoffeln - ein Gemüse für Marsbewohner
In 600 Jahren von Südamerika bis ins All. Eine
grandiose Karriere!
Sweet potatoes – a vegetable for Marsians
In 600 years it went from South America to
outer space. A grand career!
The sweet potato is one of those vegetables that always
appears in your sight here on Gran Canaria.
Potatoes – such a mundane source of food, you’re
probably wondering. We promise: soon we will have
changed your opinion.
Before the educational we’ll start with the culinary
side: Independing on which type a fine, nutty and
sweet culinary delight awaits us which should remind
us of butternut or Hokkaido pumpkin.
Cut into chips or laminated on a salad or on a gratin,
it are delicious anyway. Still, our favourite is the pure.
With butter, cinnamon a pinch of salt – an incredible,
mouth-watering flavour explosion. While with the
good old taters you can only eat the bulb itself, here
the sweet potato greens can be made into a spinach
like dish.
Where can I get?
While in Germany and other European countries the
sweet potato has become a popular vegetable and
can be found in many supermarkets, here it is available
everywhere. Little wonder – the bulb thrives at
a temperature of 24ºC and has been farmed on our
sunny island since 1544.
You can find it as a boniato or moniato – more commonly
though as a batata at the local farmers’ market
or also at Spar, Lidl, Mercadona.
Every child recognises the batata as a side dish for
encebollado de bacalao (stockfish with tomato-onion
sauce). Of course, it is also served at Christmas as a
stuffing for the truchas – fried pastries for dessert.
