New Year’s Eve in Gran Canaria
Every year we ask ourselves the same two question before
New Years: where do we go and what do we wear? The Canarian
weather is of great help as thick coats, scarves, hats
and gloves can be gladly left at home when lighting the
firework. Yes, even though the weather does cool off during
December you’ll be fine with a jumper or cardigan. This way
you can concentrate completely on your party outfit.
For the locals, New Year’s is both sexy and festive. Depending
on your location seductive dresses
and suits may be required.
Do you know where you will celebrate? There are many
possibilities: The largest parties with fireworks take place in
Las Palmas on the Las Canteras beach and in Maspalomas
around the lighthouse. However, you can celebrate anywhere:
whether in a bar, restaurant, in Cita or in Yumbo....
Las Palmas, Puerto Rico, Mogan or Playa del Ingles – they all
have one thing in common, at midnight
the new year is welcomed!
Tourists will eagerly scan the sky at midnight to watch the
colourful fireworks commence, after 5 seconds they will take
a confused glance at their watches. Why ? No fireworks! It
will only become weirder as they look around.
Everyone will be trying to swallow 12 grapes.
Swallowing the grapes is an old Spanish tradition, for every
bell ring you swallow a grape to get 12 months of good
luck in the new year. Whether this tradition was intended to
mock the nobles for their excessive wine consumption or if
it is a marketing coup of the winemakers –
we may never know.
Another funny fact is that the time between the bell rings
has been increased to allow the Spaniards to eat the grapes
simultaneously to the countdown. So don’t forget your 12
grapes for your 12 months of luck?
