What do they look like?
Sweet potato isn’t immediately a sweet potato. They
may be small and 100g light or they may be a 30cm,
several kilos heavy vegetable. Round, long, spindleshaped
– sometimes white, yellow, orange, pink or
violet. Actually, they all taste different too!
A delight not only in the kitchen
As it happens, the batate has been very popular in
European beds for centuries. Christopher Columbus
introduced the bulb to Portugal and Spain where it
thrived, it quickly became the food of the poor.
And oh wonder: the subsequent hot-bloodedness and
passion that followed the enjoyment of the sweet potato.
Now this, drew the attention of the rich of the
country. To then be imported by the English in masses
as a potency-increasing aphrodisiac.
Sweet but nonetheless healthy
Love-making is already a healthy pastime, and with
this aphrodisiac countless further positives arise.
Anaemia, diabetes or high blood pressure. Cancer,
high cholesterol levels, depression, atherosclerosis
or rheumatism, and cataracts do not turn into threats
with regular consumption.
Packed with nutrients and vitamins, they already provide
you with 89% of your daily recommended vitamin
A intake. Even a couple of tasty spoonfuls will
give you 79% of the important beta carotin. One
could write a whole essay about the sweet potato, but
as you may have noticed we are talking about a true
super-potato.
Hang on, wait a minute: potatoe?
Technically, the sweet potato is only distantly related
to our well-known potato. While the latter belongs to
the nightshade family, sweet potatoes are bindweeds,
which belong to a very different botanical branch.
With its phenomenal vital substances and nutrients,
high levels of energy per area, cultivation period and
its easy adaptability, NASA has selected the sweet potato
as THE crop for any future planned Mars expeditions.
Believe it or not, the author of this text is now going
to the kitchen to sneakily eat his nightly snack made
up of some wonderful batata puree.
