others the dam of the well-known racing
stallion Widlak (Sheik) by Emin. Born in
1974, Wileika (Diem / Wielka) won the first
official purebred Arabian race organized by
the DRAV (German Arabian Racing Club) in
Germany in 1977, became National Senior
Champion at Aachen in 1982 and was retained
as a broodmare. But although she
had numerous daughters, her family died
out there in the 1990s. The dam line of Wielka's
full sister Wjuga can still be found today
with a few small private breeders.
Already in the early 1970s there were signs
of changes in the direction of breeding at
the stud when the first purebred Arabians
from Poland arrived. At that time, the Ismer
Stud had a contract with the Polish company
ANIMEX, which regulated the import and
export of animals, and Ismer was the sole
importer for Polish Arabians in Germany.
This meant that many of the imported Polish
horses went on to other owners after a
short stay. However, one remained, namely
the stallion Diem (Negatiw / Dimatra). In
addition to several licensed stallions (all
of whom were sold), he produced excellent
daughters for the stud.
Expansion of the breeding base
In 1972 there was another, completely different
addition. This was a small, quite delicate
and inconspicuous young colt from far
away Marbach State Stud, who only stood
out because he was already snow-white as a
yearling. His name: Madkour I (Hadban Enzahi
/ Moheba II). He was the first Straight
Egyptian Arabian at the Ismer Stud and he
was to become the stud's most important
sire. Today his influence extends far beyond
the Ismer Stud and also beyond Germany

and Europe, but his influence in Ströhen
cannot be overlooked to this day, both through
his daughters and through his sons
Madkours Impuls and Siam. His grandson
Saphir III (Siam / Seneca) is now 24 and no
longer used for breeding, but he is the sire of
some of the best broodmares. Both he and
his parents come from the stud's small Straight
Egyptian breeding program.
However, the Polish lines always set the
tone. Diem was the first, but not the last,
stallion from Poland who was to give Ismer's
breeding new impulses. Emin (Celebes / Elmira)

by many other Polish stallions, which were
mainly bought or leased under the stud management
of Holger Ismer: Eunizar (El Azrak
/ Eunice) *1969, Pasat (Gwarny /Parma) *
1978, Diagram (Palas / Draperia) *1980, Orion
(Aloes / Orchidea) *1984, to name just a
few. Breeding connections to Scandinavia
were maintained early on and stallions were
exchanged, initially with the Swedish stud
farm Blommeröd. This is how the eventual
world champion Rumak (Partner / Rucasja)
came to Ströhen, as well R.D. Misha (Algiers
/ Maritsa).
The aforementioned Pasat deserves a special
mention. Holger Ismer bred the pure
Polish stallion Penthagonn (out of Panela
by Diem) from him, who brought the Bairactar
sire line back to Marbach in the 1990s.
It flourished again thanks to his grandson
Dschehim – without Holger Ismer and Pasat
this would not have been possible.
Many Polish mares have also enriched the
herd in Ströhen over the years, of which
more than a dozen have established their
own families. The first place among them
belongs them belongs to Perfidia (Palas /
Pentoda), imported in 1992, from the famous
"P" family of Janow Podlaski. There is
also a "W" family again today, which does
not go back to Wiszkha, but to the pure Polish
Wameeda (Euben / Wabasca) from Ostenfelde
Stud.
In the mid-1980s there was another interesting
development regarding old "German"
lines. As a zoo director, Holger Ismer
had connections to the Rostock Zoo in the
former GDR and was able to import some
pure Polish mares from the zoo's breeding
program. One of them was Zyrafa (Abu Afas
/ Zygota), whose line has been preserved
