at the time and represented a highlight of
"old German" breeding, as he was of pure
Marbach descent. His full brother Madour
had no less quality, although he was always
overshadowed by his "big" brother. But he
was an international sire, leased to Austria
and England, and also covered mares at his
home stud.
These two brothers also had three full sisters:
Mashoura, Ma Chere and Madoura,
who were no less successful in the show
ring. But they demonstrate how difficult it
can be to continue breeding with such outstanding
mares. After all, when you've reached
that level, where do you want to go? All
three were retained as broodmares, but only
Mashoura's branch has survived to this day,
through her granddaughter IS Mashama
(Pamour / Mashique by El Thay Kayed). She
is currently only represented by one broodmare
in the herd, IS Masida (SI Sidi Rayyan /
IS Mashama).
Zucht
Tradition and progress
Like no other, the Ismer Stud is a family affair
in which all family members participate.
Almost everyone can be found as a breeder
in the stud book, not just the respective stud
managers. Because this breeding program
has been in the family for three generations
(the fourth is already waiting in the wings),
you will find an unusual continuity here. In
the course of more than 50 years there have
hardly been any major upheavals. Although
new blood was added from time to time, it
blended harmoniously into the overall picture
without displacing the tried and tested.
This hasn’t changed to this day. Most of the
mare families today go back to mares imported
by Holger Ismer, but the focus has long
since ceased to be "pure Polish". The Polish
IS Wasabi (El Mariachi / IS Warmia) *2014 comes from a pure Polish dam line. - IS Wasabi stammt

mares were also mated with Madkour I, as
well as with his sons Madkours Impuls and
Siam and his grandson Saphir III. The old
Shari I family is still one of the stud's largest
mare families and has mixed bloodlines. In
addition, there are always some Straight
Egyptian mares in the herd, for which two
Egyptian stallions are currently available.
The range of stallions is broad and very diverse.
There are around ten stallions in residence,
with leased stallions or outside stallions
often being used. Homebred stallions
like IS Exxpu (QR Marc / IS Exelsia) – from the
Shari I family – tend to be the exception.
Sharahm (Gharam / Sorella), who has joined Ismer Stud as leasing stallion in 2022, reinforces the

Both Holger Ismer and his son Dr. Nils Ismer
proved to have a real “knack” when it comes
to using outside stallions, for example when
Dr. Nils Ismer leased the brown El Mariachi
(Excalibur / Sharima III) in 2012-2013 from
small breeder Nadja Brennicke. This stallion
was licensed, awarded a premium, and
performance-tested, as well as a successful
show champion at the time; an unusual
combination. He also brought a lot of old
Achental blood with him through his granddam
Soraya El Assuad. His contribution was
a complete success: the Mariachi daughters
IS Ella Nora, IS Pomposa, IS Wasabi, and IS
Wimea are currently among the most beautiful
and best broodmares in the stud.
Since Dr. Nils Ismer has taken over the management
of the stud, modern show lines
have also been added. The most successful
sires of the last few years were Poseidon OS
(Ajman Moniscione / Maryah OS), who was
leased twice from the Osterhof Stud, and Ascot
DD (Glorius Apal / Lady Nina DD), who is
now owned by the stud, both of whom were
awarded gold on their registration. Their
excellent offspring can delight even those
who are not fans of modern show horses;
after all, they come from a strong and solid,
predominantly Polish mare base. These stallions’
first daughters are now enriching the
broodmare band.
This year, a highly interesting stallion has
joined the stud on lease, in turn reinforcing
old, in this case old Polish, lines: Sharahm
(Gharam / Sorella by Wadim). He has been
reliably producing outstanding daughters
with Johanna Ullström for years, so the next
foal crop should be really exciting. Germany's
oldest purebred Arabian stud, and with
it the Shari family, can look to the future
with confidence.
