When NiCl2 was reacted with more than 3 mol. equiv. of (pyridin-2-yl)methanol, the
octahedral nickel complex 17 was formed quantitatively and isolated as a blue powder. The
reaction of complex 15 with (pyridin-2-yl)methanol in methanol in a 1:2 ratio also led to the
formation of this complex, as indicated by a colour change of the solution from green to blue
[eqn (5)].

The crystal structure of 17·CH2Cl2 has been determined by X-ray diffraction. An ORTEP
view of the molecular structure is shown in Figure 3 and selected bond distances and bond
angles are given in Table 2.
