Abstract
Chapitre III
Reactions of 2-diphenylphosphino-methyl-2-thiazoline (PNth) and 2-diphenylphosphino-
methyl-2-oxazoline (PNox) with anhydrous NiCl2 afforded red solutions in CH2Cl2 which upon slow
evaporation at 25 °C yielded red powders of [NiCl2(PNth)] (1) and [NiCl2(PNox)] (2), respectively.
These mononuclear complexes are similar to their dibromo analogs [NiBr2(PNth)] (3) and
[NiBr2(PNox)] (4) which have been shown by X-ray diffraction to have a distorted square planar
structure. However, rapid precipitation from the red CH2Cl2 solutions of 1 or 2 yielded green
powders with the same formula. Green single crystals of 1 were shown by X-ray diffraction to
correspond to the formulation [NiCl2(PNth)]4⋅2CH2Cl2 (1a⋅2CH2Cl2). The structure of this complex
shows an unprecedented, centrosymmetric Ni4Cl8 core. This tetranuclear complex undergoes a
unique pressure-induced isomerization to the square planar monomers [NiCl2(PNth)], which is in
equilibrium with the tetramer in solution. Similar observations were made with the PNox ligand. The
magnetic properties of [NiCl2(PNth)]4⋅2CH2Cl2 (2a) are consistent with the presence of four
octahedral Ni(II) ions.
