Triage and death. In the agricultural society of China in the past
2,000 years, the custom of marriage followed strictly six formal rituals:
marriage proposal, negotiation, engagement, ritual for obtaining
the birth-date of the engaged to confirm the material relationship,
fortune-telling for the best wedding date, and finally wedding ceremony.
Each of these rituals would offer a chance for lavish feasting
and betrothal-gift bergaining. This age-old practice has been observed
in some rural areas in China up till even the present day. Sociologists
in China have long noted that in such a practice, marriage is in essence
an inter-family transaction in which the young ones concerned
have no say a manifestation of squander, haggle and hypocrisy, everything
except love. During 1997 and early 1998, we had a chance to
trace and file such a practice in two marriage cases in a remote
mountainous area in Southwest China, one involving a bride to settle
down in her groom’s family, while the other, a man in his bride’s...

BIBO Liang • born in 1963, is a documentary filmmaker of China.
He graduated from Mianyang Agriculture College and Sichuan
University. From 1992, he began his film career. He has made quite
a few Documentary films, which have been awarded different prizes
in China and aboard. On January 1997, he attended „FIPA” of
France. On March 1998, he attended the international competition
of „Cinema Du Reel” at Paris, his film SAN JIE CAO got the „Mention
Special”. On November 1998, he attended
the platform of „IDFA” at Amsterdam
with the same film. On November
1999, he attend the Festival dei Popoli
at Florence in Italy and IDFA (International
Documentary Filmfestival
Amsterdam) with film MARRIAGE.
