Recommendations have been made elsewhere to systematically investigate the health effects of these manufactured nanomaterials within the next five years [Maynard et al. 2006; NIOSH 2008b]. Integrating results of nanoparticle toxicity investigations with the results of the research program developed as a result of this Roadmap may lead to a broader and more fundamental understanding of the determinants of toxicity of EPs. Working toward achieving the goals delineated in this Roadmap is consonant with NIOSH’s statutory mission to generate new knowledge in the field of occupational safety and health and to transfer that knowledge into practice for the benefit of workers. Advancing knowledge 102 relevant for use in protecting workers from adverse health effects arising from exposure to asbestos fibers and other EMPs is the ultimate goal. Though further scientific research conducted by NIOSH will continue to focus on the occupational environment, NIOSH intends to pursue partnerships to ensure that scientific research arising from this Roadmap will comprise an integrated approach to understanding and limiting EMP hazards incurred not only in work settings, but also in the general community and the general environment. As information becomes available from research activities, NIOSH plans to assist in the development and dissemination of educational materials describing the outcomes of the research and their implications for occupational and public health policies and practices.
