Community <strong>Forestry</strong> International (CFI), an international agency, has agreed <strong>to</strong> provide financial<br />

support <strong>of</strong> $12,131 per year and technical support for a three-year project period <strong>to</strong> the community as<br />

Payments for Environmental Services.<br />

viii Green India Mission (GIM) is one <strong>of</strong> the eight missions under India’s National Action Plan on Climate<br />

Change. The overarching objective is <strong>to</strong> increase the forest cover on 5 m ha <strong>of</strong> forest/non forest lands<br />

and improving the quality <strong>of</strong> forest cover on another 5 m ha, and <strong>to</strong>gether improving ecosystem goods<br />

and services on 10 m ha. The salient features <strong>of</strong> GIM include: improving the livelihoods <strong>of</strong> 3 million<br />

forest dependent households; enhancing a broad array <strong>of</strong> ecosystem goods and services such as biodiversity,<br />

carbon sequestration and hydrological services, and realising carbon benefits as co-benefits;<br />

providing a definitive focus on improving the quality <strong>of</strong> forests/ecosystems and not merely on increasing<br />

the quantity <strong>of</strong> forests; finding pathways <strong>to</strong> resolve institutional issues relating <strong>to</strong> tenure and user<br />

rights; providing a major focus on democratic decentralization, au<strong>to</strong>nomy, accountability and inclusiveness<br />

with local communities at the heart <strong>of</strong> implementation and proposing an integrated approach <strong>of</strong><br />

treating forest and non forest lands simultaneously in a given bio-physical unit, and addressing the<br />

drivers <strong>of</strong> degradation through cross-cutting interventions and convergence with other programs.<br />
