ACTIVITY 1 - Different People, Different Jobs<br />

Learning Objectives<br />

• Students identify a range of occupations and<br />

categorise occupations into industry groups.<br />

Lesson Duration<br />

» 45 minutes<br />

Display a series of controversial “work” related statements around the classroom.<br />

Statements:<br />

• The happiest workers are those who earn lots of money.<br />

• Work is boring.<br />

• People doing dangerous jobs should get paid more.<br />

• Volunteer work is not important work.<br />

• Some work is more important than other kinds of work.<br />

• Unpaid work is easy work.<br />

Students respond to each statement and share their views by discussing with peers and sharing with the class.<br />

Students have three “mad” minutes to list as many different jobs as possible.<br />

Remind students that unpaid work can also be included.<br />

Students share some of their responses in small groups.<br />

Small groups then join with another group to further extend their jobs list.<br />

Distribute the Which Industry? activity sheet. Students categorise their list of jobs into the Which Industry?<br />
