Introduction<br />

Ask the students:<br />

“Besides spending notes and coins, how else can consumers purchase goods and services?<br />

Can money be more than just notes and coins?”<br />

Students may respond “you can buy things on credit”, “I’ve heard of EFTPOS”, or “Mum or Dad use their<br />

credit card sometimes.”<br />

Explain:<br />

“Goods and services can be purchased using different methods of payment.”<br />

"How to Pay" Role-play<br />

Distribute the “How to Pay” Role-play activity sheet. (double-sided)<br />

This role-play has three characters:<br />

Malik Money<br />

Carrie Credit Card<br />

Effie EFTPOS<br />

The characters are shopping together and talking about how they purchase goods.<br />

The role-play outlines the positives and negatives of each method of payment.<br />

Students can act out the role-play in small groups or as a whole class.<br />

Students can make a sign or mask <strong>for</strong> their character and hold it up each time their character speaks.<br />

After per<strong>for</strong>ming the role-play, students then complete the advantages and disadvantages table <strong>for</strong> each payment method.<br />

Conclusion - Snakes and Ladders<br />

Students use the in<strong>for</strong>mation in their advantages/disadvantages table to design their own game of Snakes<br />

and Ladders. The advantages will act as ladders and the disadvantages are snakes.<br />

Students demonstrate their understanding of cash, credit card and EFTPOS by<br />

identifying:<br />

» the difference between each payment method<br />

» advantages and disadvantages of each payment method.<br />
