Statistics and Emerging Trends 2006<br />
From April 12th to 17th 2005, <strong>the</strong> NGO EkoAgroOhrid, FYR <strong>of</strong> Macedonia and Eko Liburnia,<br />
Croatia, supported by <strong>the</strong> Ministry <strong>of</strong> Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management <strong>of</strong><br />
FYR <strong>of</strong> Macedonia organized a conference on Soil Fertility and Diversity in Mediterranean<br />
Agroecosystems.<br />
The conference reported on <strong>the</strong> progress in soil fertility and diversity in <strong>the</strong> Mediterranean agroecosystems<br />
and <strong>the</strong> related soil amendments and farming operations. The goal <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> conference<br />
was to provide a forum for interaction, discussion, and information exchange among scientists,<br />
agriculturists and farmers on <strong>the</strong> role <strong>of</strong> soil fertility in developing sustainable <strong>organic</strong> farming<br />
systems in <strong>the</strong> Mediterranean.<br />
The topics included <strong>the</strong> following subjects:<br />
1. Soil management and amendments<br />
2. Green manures and cover crops<br />
3. Soil physical conditions<br />
4. Soil erosion prevention techniques<br />
5. Soil fauna and flora<br />
6. Nutrient cycling<br />
7. Nutrient budgets in Mediterranean <strong>organic</strong> farming systems.<br />
A parallel session entitled ORGANIC WORLD was also organized. This session was an opportunity<br />
for participants from different countries to present various aspects <strong>of</strong> global <strong>organic</strong> sector,<br />
including: Country presentations, regional cooperation, presentations <strong>of</strong> projects and companies<br />
(production, inspection & certification, marketing, research & development, training).<br />
On this occasion <strong>the</strong> IFOAM Mediterranean Group held its General Assembly. Gunnar Rundgren,<br />
IFOAM president was present. A new executive board was elected:<br />
