Antiterrorism—Defensive measures used <strong>to</strong> reduce the vulnerability of individuals<br />

and property <strong>to</strong> terrorist acts, <strong>to</strong> include limited response and containment<br />

by local military forces. Also called AT.<br />

Building Hardening—Enhanced conventional construction that mitigates<br />

threat hazards where standoff distance is limited. Building hardening may<br />

also be considered <strong>to</strong> include the prohibition of certain building materials and<br />

construction techniques.<br />

Building Separation—The distance between closest points on the exterior<br />

walls of adjacent buildings or structures.<br />

Combating Terrorism—Combating terrorism within the DOD encompasses<br />

all actions, including antiterrorism (defensive measures taken <strong>to</strong> reduce vulnerability<br />

<strong>to</strong> terrorist acts), counterterrorism (offensive measures taken <strong>to</strong><br />

prevent, deter, and respond <strong>to</strong> terrorism), terrorism consequence management<br />

(preparation for and response <strong>to</strong> the consequences of a terrorist incident/event),<br />

and intelligence support (collection and dissemination of terrorism-related<br />

information) taken <strong>to</strong> oppose terrorism throughout the entire
