Epiphany: Christian holy day. The arrival of the Magi at the Manger.<br />

Ploiaphesia:<br />

Ploiaphesia: Roman holy day. Also called the Isidis Navigum (the Festival of the Ship of<br />

Isis). The Romans celebrated on January 5th and 6th, but the original Egyptian celebration was on<br />

March 5th. Ships were dedicated on this holy day because that put the ships under the protection of Isis.<br />

The Romans viewed Isis as Goddess of the sea and navigation. Traditional celebrations included: lights,<br />

music, carnival, and torch-lit processions, as well as balsam, dedicating a ship to Isis, carrying flower<br />

garlands (espeically roses) to the sea, mirrors, perfume, pouring libations of milk into the sea, sailing a<br />

ship to sea, or making and launching a small votive boat on the sea, river, or lake in honor of Aset (Isis).<br />
